Let’s Place Profits Ahead of Nature

Well, it was bound to happen. The Administration and now Congress are moving to further destroy our natural heritage. We already know that we are facing an unprecedented rate of species extinction, so why not move to strip what protections remain by gutting the Endangered Species Act?

As the Times reports, the proposals to gut the act are a wish list assembled by oil and gas companies, libertarians (you know, the people who say, “Don’t tell me what to do, but don’t touch my social security or government subsidies for my businesses”), ranchers and those others who just don’t give a hoot (sorry for the pun). Isn’t it odd that the original act was signed by a Republican President?

Now the only factor that will matter when it comes to protecting endangered species is money…and oddly enough, almost all can agree that there is no way to really quantify the value of endangered species or habitat protection in a hard and fast manner.

Well, I rarely ask for action, and I know that it is somewhat quixotic to say write your members of Congress…but do it…

Better yet, VOTE IN NOVEMBER…
