Towns Fear Increasing Costs Could Force Them to Curtail Or Even Cancel Recycling

Video by Carolyn Gusoff- CBS New York

Due to recent changes in recycling acceptance policies in China, local municipalities are rethinking recycling programs. The problem, says environmental consultant Wayne Defeo is "... that they don't want the dirty cans, bottles and papers."

If the recyclables sent to China for processing are not 99.5% pure they are rejected at an enormous cost to the shipper which is ultimately the taxpayer. Local officials are now trying to educate the public to keep the recycling streams separate and "clean" in order to prevent these charges.
