Help Save Environmental Education in New Jersey
For many years, the New Jersey School of Conservation has helped many teachers and students learn about the importance of our environment and our need to act as reasonable stewards of that environment. When Montclair State University made the rather poorly guided decision to abandon the school, it was forced to suspend operations. However, after a tremendous effort by the Friends of SOC, the school was able to reopen. This is thanks in large part to the efforts of our legislature in providing $3.5 million in grants to assist in funding the school’s operations.
Now those funds have effectively been cut by the Governor’s proposed budget. Only through our actions can the school, and its vital educational function be saved.

NOTE: In the interest of full disclosure, I taught at the school and was a graduate teaching fellow there when Montclair State operated the school. It was a defining moment for me and I know that we reached many people who would never have understood about the environment without the school.
