Another False Attack on Electric Vehicles

Congress is attempting to add another fee to drivers of electric vehicles under the guise of arguing that EV’s don’t pay the gasoline tax and thus, are not paying their fair share for road maintenance. This false attack on electric vehicles is a similar argument to that made in New Jersey and endorsed by our so called environmental Governor when he allowed the tax exemption to lapse and slapped additional registration fees on EV’s.

In a study conducted by Consumer reports, both are proven incorrect. While EV drivers do not pay gasoline tax, and should certainly pay something for the maintenance of roads (just as we all should), these new fees would disproportionately assess fees to EV’s while encouraging more use of gasoline.

Clearly, neither the Governor of New Jersey, or the Congress understand the concept of using tax codes to foster change. The entire point of tax incentives is to move the needle to a different behavior. We have more than 150 years of tax codes encouraging the use of fossil fuels, encouraging people to get out of mass transit and use cars and exploiting our natural environment.

Now, just when we are starting to see things change, the luddites who want to hold onto that pollution encouraging technology are trying to stymie change in the cleaner direction.

Write to your Congressperson to oppose this. While I doubt that my Congressman, Tom Kean, Jr will listen, I will let him know….

(Note: in the interest of full disclosure, I do now drive an EV…I have driven high efficiency vehicles for more than 20 years..and under this proposal, any high efficiency hybrid will also be punished).
