NJ Plastic Bag Ban a Success

Linda Doherty and JoAnn Gemenden have written an excellent article on the success of the plastic bag ban in New Jersey. When first implemented, we heard the typical lament that the world is ending and how could people get their groceries home without plastic bags. Well, we are all managing.

While there are certainly issues with reusable bag glut, and tweaking that should be considered, it is clear that the roads and waterways are cleaner and the plastic bag ban in New Jersey has worked.

Of course, we don’t all agree on all things..I don’t agree with the paper bag ban since that paper was almost universally recycled and even if littered, would biodegrade very quickly. I also think that paper bags are superior to reusable bags in some respects as we are witnessing a glut of such bags and I do see them in the garbage..thus creating more plastic waste…but no system is perfect, and in the normal world, politics is the art of the doable…thus a success is a success….
