Reusable Coffee Pods Yet Again
Ok, I know that I am tired of hearing about and reading about coffee pods….and you must be as well. However, it seems that we are addicted to them for their convenience. Why is it so hard to either make a recyclable pod, or get to a reusable coffee pod?
As reported in Grist, the issue is, surprise, surprise…the nature of the plastic containers. Both their composition and the nature of cross contamination.
Keurig is betting on aluminum pods to fix this. Nespresso has used Aluminum pods for some time and worked with a New Jersey composting company, AGChoice, to deconstruct the pods, recycle the aluminum and compost the contents.
This may be the solution…so I leave you with two questions.
1. Why would you want to drink coffee from a plastic pod that has had very hot water passed through it in light of the possibility of chemical leaching into the coffee?
2. Why can’t you simple use a metal filter (or paper) and compost the coffee contents?
Oh well…maybe the next article will have better news.
