The latest report from the CRI…Container Recycling Institute…shows a decline in bottle bill redemption…Of course they state that this is due to the low deposit value on the container…not the reality that bottle bills are out of touch and people simply do not want to be inconvenienced with bottle bills that are inefficient, non-sustainable and artificial constructs from a prior era that no longer exists.

By CRI’s argument, what deposit level would entice people to waste gasoline, or worse yet, trek distances to bring back empty containers? Or the worst yet, have people scavenge through other’s trash to retrieve the money?

The concept of bottle bills is out of date. Let’s get together on real extended producer responsibility legislation and make sure that what we manufacture is safe and recyclable.
