Debby Lee Cohen…Yes

Ok, that title should get your attention.

polystyrene tray

The NY Times printed the obituary for Debby Lee Cohen in June. Ms. Cohen was an artist, who also became an anti-plastics activist. According to her story, she noticed that the NY City school system was throwing away over 800,000 polystyrene food trays every day when her daughter was in the second grade. She was appalled.

Unlike so many of us, she did not just complain, she did something about it. She gathered a group of like minded people and pushed for a solution.

In 2010, she led a effort to get the NYC DOE to ban trays on Tuesdays…this led to a 20% reduction in foam trays going into the waste stream…

But that was not enough and she continued to push for change…This change did not just include adults, but Ms. Cohen also involved the students…and had them learn how to make change.

Yes, change is possible. Have a well deserved rest Ms. Debby Lee Cohen…and thank you.
