Food Waste Bans Usually Don’t Work; But They Can

First, before I get to the food waste bans let me say that I hate the term food waste…food is only a waste if it is not utilized to make compost or energy. It is a food resource.

Secondly, the findings of the report cited by Fast Company make it clear that the simplest reasons that these bans fail is due to a lack of facilities to take the material…TAKE NOTE NEW JERSEY AND EITHER LEAD, FOLLOW OR GET OUT OF THE WAY.

We have a food recycling law but our regulators will not allow facilities to be built. Hopefully this is changing.

The second reason is a lack of enforcement. If we have a law, it must be enforced.

Lastly, people must understand how and what to compost.

We can do more.
