Recycling is a Design Issue

Wow, that is a great statement. The Waste Management Sustainability Forum really drives this point home. The problems associated with plastics are not so much an issue of chemistry as poor design. We design plastics without thought to their recyclability…and then we compound this problem by designing packaging that is hard to recycle due to the number and types of plastics that they are made from.

I don’t agree that compostable plastics are the way to go since we don’t know what the chemical residue is as of yet, but all options should be explored.

More importantly, we must, as noted by Dr. Leyla Acaroglu, change our thinking from the linear economy to the circular economy.
