What Really Happens to Recycling
Alexander Clapp’s guest essay in the NYT’s about what really happens to recycling raises several damning and important questions and conclusions. His historical summary says a great deal about how much we in the United States really only care about our material going “away;” not where it goes.
This is a thought provoking piece. It is well researched and much of what it says about our willing ignorance with regard to our disposable society.
Because of its global nature, both in reference to the globe and all recyclable material being lumped together, it does ignore regional aspects as they relate to recycling here in New Jersey. For example, our plastic that is collected….bottles and jars, tend to stay in North America. In other words, not everything about recycling is a lie…that is an over simplification.
This does not diminish the value of the article, but it does raise the point that we must all research what happens to our recycling and more importantly, how can we reduce what we generate.
