Companies Finally Being Held to Account for False Recycling Statements
As reported in Climate News and provided to me by Enviropolitics, Reynolds and Walmart have agreed to pay a fine of $216,670 to give back the profits made from selling plastic bags for recycling. For years, we in New Jersey have been complaining to Reynolds, the makers of Hefty, that their product is falsely labeled and that it cannot be recycled as claimed. Minnesota has been able to put a stop to these false recycling statements.
It is now time for New Jersey and every other state where these products are sold to go after Reynolds and get them to stop making these claims.
In New Jersey, the Truth in Labeling Bill and the Extended Producer Responsibility Bill, both sponsored by Senator Smith, would help to stop these false recycling statements.
In the interim, write to your elected officials and get the Attorney Generals of your state to do the same.
